High-resolution thin-section imaging and elemental mapping
At H-Expertise Services, we utilize advanced imaging and analytical techniques to provide comprehensive insights into the geological and geochemical characteristics of your samples. Our services include high-resolution thin-section imaging, cathodoluminescence petrography, and Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) for chemical mapping. By integrating these advanced imaging techniques, we provide a comprehensive toolkit for characterizing geological samples that also support and help interpreting all our other analytical services.
High-resolution thin-section imaging with Keyence VHX 7000N
Our high-resolution thin-section imaging service, using the Keyence VHX 7000N microscope, provides unparalleled detail on the microstructures and mineral compositions of rock samples. This precision aids in the accurate interpretation of geological processes and history, crucial for effective resource management.
- Raster build-up and composite imaging: We create high-resolution composite images by summing up to 500+ individual images, tailored to the resolution requested by the client. This allows for detailed analysis of the entire thin section.
- 3D profiling: The Keyence microscope also generates 3D profiles of ablation spots in both carbonate and zircon samples. This is essential for quality checks and petrographic phase identification in 3D space.
- Fluid inclusion imaging: Investigate fluid inclusion density in diagenetic phases, providing insights into fluid migration and thermal history within the geological sample.
Cathodoluminescence Petrography
Cathodoluminescence (CL) imaging reveals the internal structures and growth zones of minerals that are not visible under standard light microscopy. This technique is invaluable for understanding the history and diagenetic processes of minerals. CL imaging may also be used in conjunction with laser ablation spots for U-Pb dating, providing detailed information about the sample, including diagenetic and cementation history. It may help in analyzing single growth zones or very detailed specific diagenetic features (e.g. Syntaxial cement around echinoderm).
LA-ICPMS for chemical mapping
Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) enables precise elemental mapping of minerals, offering insights into their major and trace chemical compositions.
Elemental maps: LA-ICPMS can generate detailed maps at various spatial resolution showing the distribution of elements such as uranium (U), thorium (Th), and lead (Pb) within the samples (used for U/Pb dating). We can map a large variety of elements (e.g. Sr, Mg, Ca, Mn) in different minerals. Please contact Xavier Mangenot for more detail.
